Most of my career was spent in uniform in all three ranks. As a constable I worked on foot patrol duties, also as a motor patrol officer, crime intelligence collator and temporary detective. Upon early promotion to the rank of sergeant in 1972 I became a cadet training officer for 3 years at the Police Training College, Middlemoor, Exeter, having previously qualified as a trainer in Police Law, Practice and Procedures at the Home Office Central Planning Unit.

This period was followed by 10 years as an operational sergeant in various roles including patrol duty in a large city centre section, station sergeant and custody officer. Promotion to the rank ofinspector came in 1985 when I was appointed as officer-in-charge of Schools Liaison within the Youth & Community Services Department. I was instrumental in the early formation of the multi-agency approach and actively contributed to the relevant police aspect of lessons contained within the Personal, Social and Health Education Curriculum for Devon & Cornwall, which has developed over subsequent years into the "best practice" model adopted by several other police forces to this day. During this period I also attended Carousel Courses at the national Police Staff College, Bramshill, eventually qualifying as a Home Office approved Community Liaison Officer.

Upon my return to operational duties I was posted to Liskeard in south east Cornwall as deputy sub-divisional commander and later as officer-in-charge of Saltash and Callington where I remained until my retirement in 1996.

During my service I was trained to use the "Holmes" major incident computer system and thereby gained experience in murder incident rooms and also of large scale independent enquiries on behalf of other U.K. police forces, including service as the logistics officer on a very high profile investigation into an alleged miscarriage of justice for which I later received a framed Commendation from the Chief Constable of Devon & Cornwall, Sir John Evans, QPM., LL.B. I was also awarded in 1985 the Police Long Service & Good Conduct Medal in recognition of 22 years of exemplary police service. Following my retirement in 1996 I took up part time employment with Group-4-Securicor,(www.g4s.com) an international security company, and was engaged in various aspects of cash in transit and courier logistics. The company decided to close its Plymouth branch in 2005 and rather than accept the option of transferring to Exeter or Truro I decided to retire full time, although I continue to remain active pursuing many of my personal interests including keeping fit. Plympton Police Station and Courthouse (winter of 1986)

I had the pleasure of serving at this excellent station in the late 60's and early 70's. Sadly, in recent years it was demolished to make way for a modern shopping precinct. A much smaller police station was built some distance away from the centre of the village !! Progress ? One small consolation, the roof top clock tower was preseved and reinstated on the shopping mall.
